There are 141 Delegates chosen across the state that serve in the Maryland General Assembly, which has the sole power to make and pass laws. These laws are then ratified or vetoed by the Governor. These Delegates, as well as State Senators, can be viewed as a lobbyist for their district to Annapolis. It is their job to create and pass laws for the betterment of their District and the State of Maryland. Some of their powers include:
Proposing, reviewing, and adopting legislation and resolutions. These can include changes to regulations, changes to taxes and the amounts, changes to laws and repercussions for breaking them, or amendments to the Maryland Constitution.
Engaging with the residents of their district and advocating on behalf of them
Reviewing and approving the Maryland budget
Overriding the Governor’s veto by a 2/3rds majority
